Discover the reasons behind this growing trend and what it means for modern motherhood.

The post Why More Women Are Having Babies in Their 40s appeared first on Window to the Womb.

]]>
If it feels like more women around you are getting pregnant later in life, you’re not imagining it. A new study from the CDC’s National Vital Statistics System has revealed that, for the first time ever, women in their 40s are having more babies than teenagers.

It’s a striking shift – but what’s really behind it?

Redefining the Timeline

For generations, society pushed a rigid timeline onto women: find a partner, buy a home, and start a family – all before the age of 30. Now, that traditional path is being rewritten. Women are increasingly choosing to focus on education, careers, personal growth, and financial independence before thinking about motherhood.

With greater access to fertility treatments and improved healthcare, starting a family later in life has become more possible than ever. Medical advancements mean that having a baby in your 40s, once seen as high-risk or unusual, is now a realistic choice for many.

Is This Really Progress?

Delaying motherhood is often framed as a feminist victory – a sign that women are taking control of their bodies, their futures, and their ambitions. And in many ways, it is. Choosing when (or if) to have children is fundamental to gender equality.

However, it’s worth asking whether all women are delaying motherhood purely out of choice. Economic pressures, the rising cost of living, student debt, and challenges in the housing market mean that for many, starting a family simply isn’t feasible earlier. It’s not just about “having it all” – it’s also about affording it all.

A New Narrative

This trend challenges outdated ideas about women’s value being tied to youth and fertility. It shows that there’s no single “right” time to become a mother – only the time that’s right for you.

Whether it’s by design or circumstance, more women are proving that life doesn’t have to follow a set schedule. And that’s something worth celebrating.

A Medical Milestone: First UK Baby Born After Womb Transplant https://windowtothewomb.co.uk/first-uk-baby-born-after-womb-transplant/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=first-uk-baby-born-after-womb-transplant Wed, 09 Apr 2025 09:51:13 +0000 https://windowtothewomb.co.uk/?p=31328 A UK-first: Grace Davidson gives birth after a womb transplant. Discover her inspiring journey and what it means for the future of fertility.

At Window to the Womb, we are constantly inspired by the strength of women and the incredible advancements in reproductive healthcare. One such moment of inspiration recently made headlines across the UK – the birth of a baby to Grace Davidson, the first British woman to deliver a child following a successful womb transplant.

A Groundbreaking Journey of Hope

In 2023, Grace made history when she became the first British woman to receive a womb transplant. Just two years later, she made history again; as the first in the UK to give birth following the pioneering procedure.

Grace was born with a rare condition known as Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which affects approximately 1 in 5,000 women. The condition causes the uterus to be absent or underdeveloped, despite the ovaries functioning normally. This means that while natural pregnancy isn’t possible, many women with MRKH can still have biological children through alternative methods – and now, womb transplantation offers a promising new path.

Grace’s womb transplant came from her older sister Amy, in what’s known as a living donor transplant, a medical first in the UK. The procedure was performed by a team of leading transplant surgeons and fertility specialists, marking a major milestone in reproductive medicine. While womb transplants have been trialled in various countries, Grace’s case stands out for its success and deeply personal donor connection.

The Gift of a Sister’s Love

Following the transplant, Grace underwent IVF using her own eggs and partner’s sperm, and the embryo was successfully implanted into her new womb. The pregnancy progressed healthily, and earlier this year, she gave birth to a healthy baby – a joyful moment not just for her family, but for future families navigating infertility due to similar conditions.

What This Means for Fertility and the Future

Grace’s story is not just one of medical innovation, but of resilience, sisterhood, and hope. It demonstrates what’s possible when science, compassion, and determination come together.

While womb transplants remain rare and complex, this successful birth paves the way for more research and increased accessibility in the years ahead. It offers fresh hope to women with uterine factor infertility (especially those with MRKH, post-cancer hysterectomy, or other congenital conditions).

This holiday season, Window to the Womb has joined forces with Action for Children to make Christmas a little brighter for children across the UK through their Secret Santa Appeal. Our support for this campaign adds a new layer of community engagement to their mission, helping families and children in need experience the joy and warmth of the holidays.

What is the Secret Santa Appeal?

Action for Children, a leading UK charity that supports vulnerable children and families, runs the Secret Santa Appeal as a Christmas fundraising campaign aimed at alleviating some of the challenges disadvantaged families face during the season. Through this appeal, they encourages the public to donate funds, which are used to provide vital support such as warm clothes, meals, gifts, and even emotional and mental health support for children.

In 2024, the appeal is as crucial as ever, as the effects of rising living costs and inflation have left many families unable to afford even basic necessities. Action for Children’s Secret Santa Appeal gives people a direct way to make a difference in a child’s life, no matter the size of their donation.

How It Works

The Secret Santa Appeal works a bit differently from a traditional Secret Santa exchange. Instead of purchasing a specific item for an assigned person, donors contribute directly to Action for Children, which uses the funds to help families in crisis. Donors can choose different donation levels, each symbolically connected to a gift or essential support that a child might need:

 • Little Teddy Bear (£5): A small but comforting teddy bear to bring warmth to a child.
 • Big Teddy Bear (£7): A bigger teddy bear for extra comfort.
 • Trip to See Santa (£10): Give a child the joy of meeting Father Christmas, an experience they might not have otherwise.
 • Books and Toys (£15): Support a child’s learning and play by gifting books and toys.
 • Christmas Present (£25): Provide a vulnerable child with a special Christmas gift.
 • Meals and Snacks (£40): Cover food costs for a child for a week, including a hot meal each evening.
 • Warm Winter Clothes and Bedding (£65): Keep a child warm with cozy winter essentials.
 • Stocking Full of Gifts (£100): A festive stocking filled with a teddy bear, games, and winter clothes.
 • Bed and Warm Duvet (£150): Give the gift of a warm, comfortable bed to a child who doesn’t have their own.

Or, you can choose your own donation amount, customising your support to the cause closest to your heart.

Why the Appeal Matters

For many children and families, especially those affected by poverty, disability, or mental health issues, Christmas can be an isolating time. Action for Children’s work directly addresses these issues by providing both short-term relief and long-term support. The Secret Santa Appeal offers an opportunity to make an impact that can ease the burden on families and create lasting memories for children who face daily struggles.

In previous years, Action for Children has highlighted that over 4 million children in the UK are living in poverty, with numbers likely to have increased due to economic challenges in 2023. By participating in the Secret Santa Appeal, donors ensure that these children feel valued and seen, despite the hardships they face.

How to Get Involved

Becoming a Secret Santa through Action for Children is easy, and there are several ways to support the appeal:

 1. Make a Direct Donation: You can visit Action for Children’s Secret Santa page on their website to make a one-time donation of any amount. Each donation level is tied to a specific impact, so you can see how your contribution makes a difference.
 2. Become a Monthly Donor: Action for Children also offers the option to become a monthly Secret Santa, extending the spirit of giving throughout the year. Monthly donations help provide consistent support to families in need.
 3. Spread the Word: Raising awareness about the Secret Santa Appeal by sharing on social media or talking to friends and family can amplify the impact, encouraging more people to join and donate.
 4. Fundraise for the Cause: Whether it’s hosting a holiday bake sale, organizing a gift-wrapping station at work, or running a festive event, fundraising can be a fun and community-driven way to support the appeal.

The Impact of Being a Secret Santa

Every donation made through the Secret Santa Appeal goes toward giving children a safe, warm, and memorable holiday season. From hot meals and warm clothes to holiday experiences and mental health support, each contribution directly helps a child and their family feel the spirit of the season in a meaningful way.

With the help of generous donors and volunteers, Action for Children aims to brighten the lives of as many children as possible, making sure that no child is left behind this Christmas.

Action for Children’s Secret Santa Appeal proves that you don’t need to know someone personally to make a meaningful difference in their life. By becoming a Secret Santa, you’re not just donating money; you’re giving a child hope, warmth, and joy at a time when they need it most. In a world that can feel divided, joining hands to support vulnerable children during the holidays is a reminder of the collective power of small acts of kindness.

This holiday season, consider being a Secret Santa through Action for Children’s appeal. Because for every child that opens a gift, feels warmth, or experiences a moment of joy, it’s a step towards building a brighter, more compassionate future.

When it comes to healthcare, trust and safety are paramount. This is why both Window to the Womb and firstScan are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care services in England. But what does this mean for you as a patient or client? Let’s explore why CQC regulation is so important and how it ensures you receive the best possible care.

What is the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?

The CQC is a regulatory body in the UK responsible for monitoring, inspecting, and rating healthcare providers to ensure they meet high standards of care. Their aim is to ensure that healthcare services, from GP practices to specialised clinics like Window to the Womb and firstScan, are:

 • Safe
 • Effective
 • Caring
 • Responsive
 • Well-led

When a healthcare provider is regulated by the CQC, it means they are subject to regular inspections and reviews to ensure that they comply with strict guidelines and provide care that meets the needs of patients.

What Does CQC Regulation Mean for You?

Being regulated by the CQC means that Window to the Womb and firstScan are held to the highest standards in several key areas. Here’s what it means for you:

1. Safety First

CQC inspections assess the safety protocols in place at healthcare facilities. This includes evaluating how well a clinic manages risk, maintains hygiene, and handles emergencies. At Window to the Womb and firstScan, this means:

 • All scans and procedures are carried out by fully trained and qualified healthcare professionals.
 • State-of-the-art equipment is used, regularly maintained, and operated by experienced staff.
 • Infection control measures and cleanliness are prioritised to protect both patients and staff.

Knowing your care is being delivered in a safe, well-regulated environment gives you peace of mind, especially when it involves something as important as your health or pregnancy.

2. High-Quality Care

CQC-regulated providers are required to deliver care that is effective and evidence-based. At Window to the Womb and firstScan, this commitment to quality ensures:

 • Clear communication: You’ll receive comprehensive information about your scan results and what they mean for you, delivered by knowledgeable healthcare professionals.
 • Personalised approach: The care you receive will be tailored to your individual needs.

3. Patient-Centered Service

A core principle of CQC regulation is putting patients first. This means that the services provided by Window to the Womb and firstScan are designed with you in mind:

The teams at Window to the Womb and firstScan understand that this can be an emotional and personal journey, and they strive to make your experience as supportive and stress-free as possible.
 • Transparent processes: All information, from pricing to scan procedures, is clearly communicated. You’ll know exactly what to expect, and there will be no surprises.
 • Confidentiality: Your personal and medical information is handled with the utmost confidentiality, adhering to data protection regulations.

4. Responsive to Your Needs

CQC-regulated healthcare providers are expected to be responsive to patient needs. This includes offering flexibility in booking appointments, addressing any concerns or questions you may have, and providing timely, high-quality service.

At Window to the Womb and firstScan, this means:

 • Flexible appointment options: You can book scans at a time that works best for you.
 • Timely results: Whether you’re confirming a pregnancy or tracking your fertility, the results of your scan will be provided quickly, ensuring you have the information you need to make informed decisions.
 • Continuous feedback loop: Your feedback is encouraged and taken seriously. If you have any concerns, the staff is responsive and committed to addressing them quickly and effectively.

5. Well-Led Services

The CQC also ensures that healthcare providers are well-led, meaning they are run efficiently, ethically, and in a way that supports the needs of both patients and staff. This ensures:

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining good health often requires proactive measures. Regular health scans can be pivotal in early detection and prevention of potential health issues. Here at firstScan, we offer a wide range of comprehensive services designed to give you peace of mind and a thorough understanding of your health.

Why Choose firstScan?

firstScan stands out due to its commitment to high-quality care, state-of-the-art technology, and personalised service. Whether you’re seeking routine check-ups or specific diagnostic tests, firstScan provides detailed and accurate results, helping you make informed decisions about your health.

What Scans Do We Offer?

Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound Scan – Booking an abdominal aorta ultrasound scan is a crucial preventative and diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the abdominal portion of the aorta, the largest artery in the body. An abdominal aorta scan is non-invasive, does not use ionising radiation, and provides real-time images that can be critical for the rapid diagnosis and ongoing management of aortic diseases. It’s a safe and effective way to help prevent one of the most dangerous vascular emergencies: a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Breast Ultrasound Scan – A breast ultrasound scan is a valuable diagnostic tool often used for various purposes related to breast health. It is a non-invasive, safe, and effective method that uses sound waves to create images of the breast tissue. It does not involve radiation, making it a preferred option for frequent examinations, particularly in younger women or during pregnancy.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Ultrasound Scan – A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) scan, typically performed using ultrasound technology, is crucial for diagnosing DVT, a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. The scan is non-invasive, does not use radiation, and provides real-time images of blood flow through veins, making it an essential tool for effectively managing DVT.

Lower Abdominal & Pelvic Ultrasounds – We provide an extensive selection of lower abdominal scans designed to address various medical concerns. Our services include thorough examinations of the prostate, renal area, kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs. Each scan is customised to meet the individual needs and circumstances of our patients, ensuring precise and targeted diagnostics. Our dedicated team of professionals utilises advanced imaging technology to deliver accurate and reliable results.

Testes & Scrotum Ultrasound Scan – Booking a testes and scrotum ultrasound scan can be crucial for diagnosing and evaluating various conditions affecting the testicles and scrotal area. An ultrasound of the testes and scrotum is a non-invasive, painless, and safe procedure that provides real-time images of the internal structure of the testicles and scrotum. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To date, there has been £268 million invested in breast cancer research – and there’s no stopping!

Research

Breast Cancer Now are currently funding over 70 projects worth just over £24 million to discover how they can prevent breast cancer, save lives, and help people to live well with and beyond the disease.

Breast cancer prevention: At least 1 in 4 breast cancers could be prevented and they want to find better ways to do this. But first, they need to know who is most at risk of breast cancer and what can be done to prevent them from developing the disease. Understanding the genetic and lifestyle causes of breast cancer through their Generations Study could help to more accurately determine someone’s personal chance of developing breast cancer.

Research to stop people dying from breast cancer: There are many areas that need to be researched to ensure that by 2050 everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live. They want to find better ways to detect and diagnose breast cancer as early as possible. The earlier it’s detected the higher the chance of treating it successfully. Researchers are also looking for new treatments that can be better tailored to each type of breast cancer. They are trying to understand why breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body where it becomes incurable and what can be done to stop it or treat it more effectively.

Research to help people live well: Breast cancer affects lives in many different ways. Breast Cancer Now want to help everybody living with, or beyond the disease to live well. Their researchers are looking for kinder treatments for breast cancer, that don’t come with devastating side effects and investigating how people affected by breast cancer can be better supported all the way through.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer

 1. A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
 2. A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
 3. A change in the colour of the breast – it may look red or inflamed
 4. A nipple change, for example it has become pulled in
 5. Rash or crusting around the nipple
 6. Unusual liquid from either nipple
 7. Changes in size or shape of the breast

On it’s own, pain in your breasts is not usually a sign of breast cancer. Look out for pain in your breast or armpit that’s there all or almost all of the time.

How to check your breasts

 1. Touch your breasts – can you feel anything new or unusual?
 2. Look for changes – does anything look different to you?
 3. Check any new or unusual changes with a GP

Support

Studies have now shown that having access to supportive services increases breast cancer survival rates by up to 64% and decreases recurrence rates by up to 48%!

Having support around you during this time is so important – whether it’s friends, family or help from a professional service. Expert help can be talking to a specialist nurse on Helpline, tuning in to live sessions or speaker videos or finding trustworthy, award-winning information to answer any questions you may have.

Every year, during the month of June, the LGBTQ community celebrates in a number of different ways. Across the world, events are held during this special month as a way of recognising the influence LGBT people have had around the world. During LGBTQ Pride Month, we celebrate this community and the contributions of its members to local, national, and international history. Every June, Pride is held in memory of the Stonewall Uprising, which occurred in Manhattan in 1969. Marches and parades have been an element of Pride since it began. Pride parades, from their roots as memorials to their current incarnation as colourful celebrations, memorialise the past, while acting as acts of resistance against those aiming to deprive the LGBTQ community of the rights it has worked so hard to achieve.

This Pride Month, Nikki from @growing.together__ shared her special parenthood journey with us!

“Both myself and Hannah quickly decided to start our family back in March 2018, and we decided it was best for our family to use a private sperm donor. Hannah fell pregnant first try with our son Arlo, and 3 months later we tried again, and she fell pregnant with Odin-Rex. Then for a long time we tried and tried for baby number 3, and unfortunately had a miscarriage at 10 weeks. We then fell pregnant again with our rainbow baby who was a beautiful little girl! We are forever grateful for using a donor to help our family grow – being lesbian mamas honestly brings so much joy and happiness.

All we have ever wanted was to share and educate others on our journey of having children. Our love is no different.”

Thank you for sharing your story with us all Nikki!

Pride Month is a time for the LGBTQIA+ community to embrace who they are and celebrate their amazing accomplishments! It is also a time for allies — corporate and individual — to show up for the community, and one way to do so is with the power of social media. For brands and small businesses, it gives the opportunity to raise awareness, pass the mic, and cultivate impactful change!
